Consider this.

It’s 11:45 p.m., way way too late to fall asleep when the alarm clock will go off at six. AM. in the freaking MORNING.

You’ve got a big day tomorrow. Work. Travel. Family. Chores. Whatever.

You lie in bed. You cannot sleep. And, then you realize it. Out of the blue. You feel the slight cramping. The pangs of *gasp* hunger. Welcome to last Wednesday night. In Girl Eat’s world.

For people watching their food intake/calories/meals and snacks, this can be a difficult feeling. Do you eat that extra snack? Do you take in more calories that day? Will you exceed your points/protein grams/carbohydrate allowance? Will my body digest food I eat this late?

For people not watching their food intake/calories/meals and snacks, this can be a difficult feeling. Am I too lazy to get up out of this bed? Is it worth it to eat again and have to brush my teeth again? Shouldn’t I just sleep and eat tomorrow? Can I eat this late without getting sick?

So many questions. So many, many questions. One very simple answer.

When you are hungry YOU GOT TO EAT.

Now, that does not mean you have to escape all bounds of whatever lifestyle you have chosen.

Truth be told, you CAN eat a snack at bedtime that will:

  • get digested by your body (calories aren’t evil demons that get bigger at night. in fact they are not evil demons at all)
  • Not make you sick. Eating a small snack at bedtime should not hurt you. If it does, don’t do it again, or, change what you ate. Maybe a lighter snack will work just fine.
  • Allow you to continue your lifestyle-or change it, if necessary. After all, if your body gets hungry and your current diet/eating style keeps you from eating when you are hungry, something is not right here. Change it. Now.

And, if it is laziness you are worried about. Imagine how lazy you will be tomorrow when you don’t sleep well all night-because you were too hungry to sleep.

Wednesday night, one string cheese and toasted roll put me right to sleep.

So, get up. Have a snack…and sweet dreams.

  2. Hi there! I know this is kinda off topic but I’d figured I’d ask. Would you be interested in trading links or maybe guest writing a blog post or vice-versa? My website covers a lot of the same topics as yours and I believe we could greatly benefit from each other. If you happen to be interested feel free to shoot me an e-mail. I look forward to hearing from you! Awesome blog by the way!

    • Thank you SO much for the super kind comment! It means so much to me. And it is so true, when we get hungry our bodies need just that-food, and, without it, we suffer, sadly, and possibly lose precious, precious sleep!!

    • It is definitely a hard feeling feeling hungry at bedtime or right before. but sometimes, resisting and staying hungry might keep you awake even longer than if you just ate something. Maybe if you ate more during the day, although sometimes I eat plenty during the day and still get hungry at night! When you are hungry you got to eat.
