Welcome to summertime! The first days of sunshine and heat always remind me of summertime when I was a child, how I would run to the ice cream truck the minute I heard the music playing in my neighborhood, the joy of ripping open ice pops that dripped sweet icey syrup into your mouth in hundred degree temperatures, the smell of cookouts and lemonade stands open everywhere. Summer meant going swimming and wearing shorts, being out of school and going on vacations with my family. Summer meant good things, fun things, happy things. I loved summer.
Getting older I’ve realized that almost every summer the first sign of summer I get to see are the headlines:
LOSE 30 pounds this summer!
BEST AND WORST BEACH BODIES!
ALL NEW SUMMER DETOX DIET SO YOU DON’T SAG IN YOUR SHORTS!
THE RIGHT SWIM SUIT FOR YOUR BODY TYPE
Now, summer brings with it the pressures, looking good in a swim suit, following appropriate style trends, having healthy and delicious bbq feasts. This year let’s change that. Let’s wear swim suits that fit, and make us look beautiful, and not worry about those three or four extra pounds (or more) every second. Let’s try to get healthy, now and throughout the year, so that we live longer and feel better. Add some veggies to your next BBQ feast. Let’s read books and talk about news, politics, crime, fashion, and ice cream flavors. Let’s not talk about our thighs or how they look in shorts. Let’s not start an office summer lose weight camp. Let’s not say oh, I shouldn’t eat that. I’m gonna be in a swim suit in three weeks. Let’s try to feel good so we will look good. You don’t sacrifice your health at one cookout or even at a few. So, pour yourself a glass of lemonade, with sugar. And, above all else, for the love of God, let’s eat BBQ and snow cones, then BBQ again.
